First Lady Melania Trump celebrated America’s tradition of facilitating unity during remarks at the 2026 Congressional Picnic.
“The White House Congressional Picnic has been a cherished American tradition for a great part of our nation’s two-hundred-and-fifty-year history,” she said. “Beyond politics, it provides an important social ritual where our nation’s leaders share a moment of light-heartedness as we transition into the warm summer months.”
Discussing the importance of the nation’s tradition, Trump said the event “reminds us that some fun and laughter with our families can bring unity, especially when our children and loved ones are by our side.” She noted that both Republicans and Democrats can accomplish great things when the focus is on the “betterment of our children.”
“We experienced great bipartisan success with the TAKE IT DOWN Act. I saw the spirit of American unity shine once again during my recent engagement with the House Ways and Means Committee as we began to shape legislation to protect America’s foster care community,” she declared.
Mrs. Trump’s remarks come as the House of Representatives approved the Fostering the Future Act, an effort led by the First Lady. The bill delivers reforms to foster care programs and facilitates the transition to adulthood.
“This historic effort to modernize America’s foster care system would have never been possible were it not for the dedicated leadership of members of the Ways and Means Committee who reached across the aisle and built a groundswell of bipartisan support for reform,” Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (R-MO) said of the legislation in a press release. “At every step of the way, we have also benefited from First Lady Melania Trump’s inspirational embrace of this cause and by listening to the voices of foster youth who came forward to share their stories and advocate for their peers.”
Mrs. Trump’s remarks align with her past calls for unity. While speaking at the Congressional Club Members’ 113th First Lady’s Luncheon, the First Lady promoted her “longstanding theme of unity to drive meaningful impact,” the White House said.
