The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has warned that a large migrant caravan is heading toward the nation’s southern border.
“USBP is closely engaged with its international partners to monitor their movement and any additional developments,” DHS told Fox News. “[United States Border Patrol] USBP reminds migrants that under the leadership of President Trump and Homeland Secretary Mullin, the border has remained closed and secured for the last 16 months.”
The caravan is believed to be in the hundreds and consists of Hondurans, Guatemalans, Salvadorans, Ecuadoreans, and Haitians. According to USBP, the caravan left San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on September 20.
DHS reiterated that the days of “catch and release” policies are over in the United States, as the border is sealed. “Anyone attempting to illegally enter the United States will be apprehended, prosecuted, and removed from the country,” the agency declared.
DHS announced earlier this month that not one illegal immigrant has been released at the southern border in over a year. Current apprehension levels sit 97% below the Biden administration’s peak in December 2023.
“Catch and release is over, consequences are back, and illegal crossings have fallen to historic lows,” DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in a statement at the time. “President Trump made a promise to the American people that he would make America safe again, and he has done just that by giving us the most secure border in American history.”
Under former President Joe Biden, Border Patrol released 10,186 individuals along the southwest border in August 2024 alone. In August 2026, that number stood at zero.
