Sen. Jim Banks of Indiana has thrown his weight behind Vice President JD Vance for the White House, becoming the first sitting member of Congress to formally back Vance for a potential presidential bid. The endorsement signals that the MAGA movement is already coalescing around its preferred successor to carry the torch after President Donald Trump’s second term.
“Vice President JD Vance is the clear choice in 2028 to carry on our America First agenda and I look forward to supporting him,” Banks declared on Monday.
The timing of Banks’ announcement wasn’t coincidental. It came on the heels of reports suggesting Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska had hinted at presidential ambitions of his own. Banks responded to those rumors with characteristic bluntness.
“It is laughable that Don Bacon, one of the most irrelevant and anti-Trump members of Congress over the last decade, would think he could run for president,” Banks told the IndyStar on Monday.
Vance himself has not formally announced any intention to seek the presidency. But the former Ohio senator turned vice president is increasingly viewed as the frontrunner among congressional Republicans looking ahead to the next election cycle. His transformation from Trump critic to trusted running mate and now potential heir apparent represents one of the more remarkable political journeys in recent memory.
The vice president has already begun collecting endorsements from prominent conservative voices beyond Capitol Hill. Erika Kirk, a conservative figure, has publicly backed a potential Vance candidacy, adding to the growing sense that the Republican establishment is preparing to unite behind him early.
Banks’ endorsement matters for several reasons.
