The House of Representatives passed a war powers resolution that demands President Trump end military action in Iran.
The resolution, passed in a 220-204 vote, was sponsored by Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) in April. Several Republicans, including Reps. Thomas Massie (KY), Brian Fitzpatrick (PA), Warren Davidson (OH), Tom Barrett (MI), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA), Zach Nunn (IA) and Nancy Mace (SC), supported the measure.
“Congress directs the President to remove United States Armed Forces from hostilities against the Islamic Republic of Iran, other than those elements of the Armed Forces that may be necessary to defend the United States or an ally or partner of the United States from imminent attack…” the resolution states.
Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) argued on the House floor that “this Congress has not authorized a war with Iran. And yet this administration has kept our troops in harm’s way, without a declaration of war, without an authorization from Congress and without any plan for how to win or end the war.”
“The administration hasn’t just continued to wage this illegal war in direct violation of the Constitution; it’s done so while Americans bear the costs: 19 fallen service members, and more than 750 service members wounded, extended troop deployments, and billions of dollars in additional spending. The president’s mismanagement of this war has hurt America’s ability to prepare for future threats,” Meeks added.
The House passed a separate war powers resolution targeting Trump’s action in Iran in July. The resolution passed in a 214-208 vote, with four Republicans supporting the measure. Those were: Reps. Tom Barrett (MI), Warren Davidson (OH), Thomas Massie (KY), and Brian Fitzpatrick (PA).
Similarly, the Senate voted 47-49 on a war powers resolution in July.
