America is in the midst of an identity crisis. It can be seen in people questioning everything from the true date of the country’s founding to whether only women can become pregnant. As a country, we are having a hard time agreeing on anything that has to do with how we see ourselves.
“It is easier to build strong children than to heal broken men,” Frederick Douglass once said. Douglass spoke of a generation living in the 1800s, but the same seems to ring true today. Oprah, Christian radio, media outlets, and more all appear to have something to say about childhood trauma. Although the idea is sadly nothing new.
Another celebration of the founding of the United States of America has arrived and, as always, it is yet another reflection upon the history of this nation. This year, Independence Day comes amid heightened racial tensions, a raucous debate over a controversial election, and an increasingly noxious political discourse.
