Philadelphia’s Far-Left DA Wins Primary, Secures Likely Third Term

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, a progressive backed by George Soros, secured a decisive victory in the Democratic primary on May 20, 2025, defeating moderate challenger Pat Dugan by nearly 30 percentage points. With no Republican opponent in the upcoming general election, Krasner is poised to serve a third term as the city’s top prosecutor.

Krasner’s tenure has been marked by controversial policies, including eliminating cash bail for certain offenses, reducing parole supervision, and advocating for lighter sentences. Critics argue these measures contributed to a surge in homicides, which rose from 351 in 2018 to 562 in 2021. However, recent data indicates a decline in violent crime, reaching a 20-year low in 2024.

During the primary campaign, Dugan, a former Philadelphia Municipal Court judge and U.S. Army veteran, positioned himself as a moderate alternative, emphasizing public safety and criticizing Krasner’s lenient approach to crime. Despite out-raising Krasner, with $900,700 to Krasner’s $499,900 between November 2024 and May 2025, Dugan was unable to overcome Krasner’s entrenched support among progressive voters.

Krasner’s campaign focused heavily on national politics, frequently attacking former President Donald Trump and his supporters. In March, Krasner referred to Trump and his base as “fascists” and “bullies,” asserting that they “like crime” to create crises for political gain.

The Philadelphia GOP encouraged voters to write in Dugan’s name on the Republican line in the primary election, aiming to position him as a general election contender. However, Dugan’s campaign manager stated he would decline the GOP nomination if offered.

Krasner’s victory underscores the enduring influence of progressive politics in Philadelphia, despite ongoing debates over crime and public safety. His anticipated third term will likely continue to reflect his reform-oriented agenda.
