Basketball Player Collapses Midgame (Video)

Old Dominion University’s Imo Essien collapsed on the court during a men’s basketball game against Georgia Southern on Saturday, according to a report from The Western Journal.

WAVY-TV reported that his teammates “watched in shock,” as the sophomore guard fell to the ground, struggled to get back up, and appeared to be in pain.

Both teams’ training staff quickly rushed to assist Essien, who did not lose consciousness and was later helped off the court by trainers.

In a statement on Twitter, Old Dominion said Essien was “responsive throughout and was able to sit with the team for the duration of the game and drove home with the team.”

The university added that Essien is in good spirits and will work with the sports medicine staff upon returning to Norfolk.

The final score of the game was 81-75 in overtime, with Essien contributing 2 points in three minutes of playing time.

Essien thanked everyone for the prayers in a tweet Sunday.
