Audio Leaked From Twitter Post-Musk Buyout Meeting Reveals Board’s ‘Emotional’ Reaction (Listen)

Audio released Tuesday by Project Veritas indicates that staffers and board members are not happy with the buyout.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Audio recordings have been leaked from the Twitter board following the decision to allow Tesla CEO Elon Musk to buy the company.
  • Project Veritas released the audio, which they reported featured Twitter’s leadership addressing the staff over their concerns regarding the Musk takeover.
  • Employees questioned Twitter board member Bret Taylor and CEO Parag Agrawal about the company’s direction and why Musk bought the social media platform, expressing shock at how quickly the deal was done.
  • Both Taylor and Agrawal acknowledged the toll that this buyout was likely taking on Twitter employees, Agrawal speaking to the “many different feelings” that staff were having.
  • The Twitter CEO also tried to settle fears of his staff, saying that the company’s policies were going to keep Twitter “safe and growing” and Agrawal said that they were focused on finding a way to have Musk talk to the employees at “the soonest possible opportunity.”
COMMENTS FROM TUESDAY’S ADDRESS:
  • “I also just want to acknowledge all the emotions of today. It is an emotional day. I want to acknowledge it,” Taylor said. “By law, we are required to act in the best interest of our shareholders,” he said while justifying the company’s sale.
  • “It’s important to acknowledge that all of you have many different feelings about what is happening,” Agrawal said. “Many of you are concerned, some of you excited, many people here are waiting to understand how this goes and have an open mind.”
BACKGROUND:
  • News broke Monday that Twitter accepted Musk’s offer to buy the company at $54.20 per share, and take it private.
  • Part of the buyout agreement includes a clause that would ban Musk from tweeting his criticism of the company, which is consistent with the current Twitter leadership’s concern about Musk’s brash communication style.
