Progressive firebrand Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), made a surprise oversight visit this week to the House Oversight Committee’s closed-door deposition of former Biden aide Ashley Williams. She arrived 15 minutes late and emerged 30 minutes later, defending former president Biden while blasting the Trump-era Republicans.
Crockett insisted she showed up because she still had “absolutely” no concerns about Biden’s mental fitness while in office. She argued her presence countered what she called the Trump “regime.” “It is important…in my mind, to be there for these witnesses. Unfortunately, we know what happens when this regime gets going. We know about the threats that come upon them, that come upon us as members of Congress,” she told reporters.
She further criticized GOP lawmakers for ignoring the hearing: “Right now, the Republicans continue to act as if this is a main priority. Yet none of them are showing up.”
Crockett framed her visit as necessary to correct what she called mischaracterizations of Biden and to stand in solidarity with those testifying. She acknowledged she couldn’t question Williams directly but emphasized her symbolic presence: “I want to make sure that I’m in the room to correct the record…”
If Democrats truly want transparency, they could let public testimony proceed—rather than staging surprise Oversight visits and grandstanding.
