“We coach ball. We don’t look at color.”
QUICK FACTS:
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers Coach Todd Bowles said in a recent interview that he doesn’t really pay attention to the race of coaches in the league.
- The question was put to Bowles in the context of an upcoming game against one of only 3 other black coaches in the National Football League.
- “I have a very good relationship with Tomlin. We don’t look at what color we are when we coach against each other; we just know each other,” Bowles said.
WHAT ELSE BOWLES SAID:
- “I have a lot of very good white friends that coach in this league as well, and I don’t think it’s a big deal as far as us coaching against each other, I think it’s normal. Wilks got an opportunity to do a good job. Hopefully he does it. And we coach ball, we don’t look at color,” Bowles added.
- “Well, when you say, ‘They see you guys,’ and ‘look like them and grew up like them,’ it means that we’re oddballs to begin with. I think the minute you guys stop making a big deal about it, everybody else will as well,” Bowles went on.
BACKGROUND:
- The issue of race recently became prevalent in the news when black rapper Kanye West wore a shirt saying “White Lives Matter” to Paris fashion week, seeming to contradict the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement.
- When asked why he made his controversial “White Lives Matter” shirt, West said it was because “they do,” as American Faith previously reported.
