U.S. Suicides at New High

Suicide rates in the United States are now more common than they were since World War II.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), almost 50,000 people took their own lives in 2022.

In 1941, there were about 48,300 suicide deaths.

Adults between the ages of 45 and 64 who took their lives increased by 7% compared to 2021.

Suicide was the second most common cause of death in those aged between 24 and 44.

The data showed that white men had higher rates of suicide than other demographics.

Suicide rates have slowly increased from 2000 to 2018, slightly dropping in 2019 and 2020.

The rates then increased in 2021 and 2022.

Reporting from The National Pulse:

“I think it’s important to realize we’ve seen these increases for many, many years,” stated Dr. Debra Houry, chief medical officer of the CDC, when announcing the latest statistics, before adding: “There was a slight decline in 2019 and 2020, but really over the past 15 years, we’ve been on this trajectory.”
