Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) announced his candidacy for governor of Alabama in the 2026 election, aiming to succeed term-limited Republican Governor Kay Ivey. Tuberville made the announcement on May 27, 2025, during an appearance on Fox News’ “The Will Cain Show” and at Byron’s Smokehouse in Auburn, the same venue where he launched his 2020 Senate campaign.
Tuberville, a former Auburn University football coach, emphasized his leadership experience and commitment to conservative values. He stated, “I’m a football coach. I’m a leader. I’m a builder. I’m a recruiter, and we’re going to grow Alabama.”
His campaign platform focuses on bolstering manufacturing, enhancing education, and curbing illegal immigration. Tuberville also highlighted his alignment with former President Donald Trump, noting that Trump has been supportive of his political endeavors.
The announcement has reshaped the Republican primary landscape, with prominent figures like Lieutenant Governor Will Ainsworth and Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate opting not to run.
Tuberville’s decision to run for governor opens up his Senate seat in the 2026 election. Potential Republican candidates for the seat include Attorney General Steve Marshall and former U.S. Representative Mo Brooks.
Despite questions about his residency due to time spent coaching outside Alabama, Tuberville asserts that he meets the state’s seven-year residency requirement, citing property ownership and updated voter registration.
