President Trump suggested that the United States will increase its involvement in the conflict in Gaza because “you have a lot of starving people,” he told reporters in Scotland.
“We also discussed, obviously, Gaza … We want to get the children fed,” he said, adding, “We only hope the food goes to the people that need it.”
“We have to help on a humanitarian basis,” Trump further stated. “Before we do anything, we have to get the kids fed, so we’ve been sending in a lot of food, a lot of the food that has been going there has been sent by the United States.”
“We’re going to be getting some good, strong food. We can save a lot of people. Some of those kids – that’s real starvation stuff. I see it. And you can’t fake that,” Trump added. “So we’re going to be even more involved.”
Discussing hostages, Trump said, “When you get it down to the final ten or twenty number, you’re not going to be able to make a deal with [Hamas], because they use them as a shield, and when they give them up, they no longer have a shield.”
Trump’s comments come days after Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announced that U.S. negotiators withdrew from ceasefire discussions with Hamas.
“We have decided to bring our team home from Doha for consultations after the latest response from Hamas, which clearly shows a lack of desire to reach a ceasefire in Gaza,” Witkoff wrote on social media. “While the mediators have made a great effort, Hamas does not appear to be coordinated or acting in good faith.”
