Trump Orders U.S. Intelligence to Intensify Surveillance on Greenland Amid Acquisition Efforts

President Donald Trump has directed U.S. intelligence agencies to escalate surveillance activities targeting Greenland, focusing on its independence movement and public sentiment regarding potential American acquisition. A classified directive, issued by officials under Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, instructs agencies such as the CIA, NSA, and DIA to identify individuals in Greenland and Denmark who support U.S. objectives, including interests in mineral exploration and territorial integration.

The directive emphasizes the strategic importance of Greenland, citing its vast reserves of rare-earth minerals, estimated at approximately 25% of global supply, and significant untapped oil and natural gas resources. Additionally, Greenland’s location is deemed critical for monitoring Russian military activities and securing Arctic shipping lanes.

In response to the surveillance initiative, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen summoned the U.S. ambassador to express serious concerns, stating that allies should not engage in espionage against each other. Greenlandic officials have also voiced apprehension, with some suggesting the closure of the U.S. consulate in Nuuk.

President Trump has publicly reiterated his interest in acquiring Greenland, asserting its necessity for national and international security. He has not ruled out the use of force to achieve this objective.

The situation has strained U.S.-Denmark relations, with Danish and Greenlandic leaders reaffirming that any decision regarding Greenland’s future must be made by its people. Despite this, the Trump administration continues to pursue its agenda, citing strategic imperatives.
