President Donald Trump announced Thursday from the Oval Office that his administration has secured a deal with pharmaceutical company EMD Serono to cut the cost of key fertility drugs used in in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. The move is part of Trump’s broader plan to make IVF more affordable and accessible for American families.
Trump said the deal will lower the cost of Gonal-f and Pergoveris, two leading IVF medications, marking the third agreement in recent weeks aimed at reducing drug prices. The president emphasized that the new pricing will help families struggling with infertility by lowering a major financial barrier to parenthood.
“This is very pro-life,” Trump said. “You can’t get more pro-life than this.”
Trump said his interest in IVF affordability began following the 2024 Alabama Supreme Court ruling in LePage v. Center for Reproductive Medicine, which held that frozen embryos could be considered children under state law. The decision led to the temporary suspension of IVF services in the state and became a national controversy. The case was ultimately dismissed by a lower court in December 2024, but it prompted Trump to act.
Trump credited Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL) with drawing his attention to the issue. He publicly supported IVF access while campaigning in 2024 and signed an executive order in February directing a federal review of policies to expand IVF availability.
Thursday’s announcement also included new federal guidance encouraging employers to offer IVF coverage as part of their health plans. Trump said the administration is committed to helping more Americans start families and is working to eliminate bureaucratic and financial hurdles to fertility care.
Responding to critics from some corners of the conservative movement who oppose IVF on religious grounds, Trump said he was unaware of such objections and reiterated his belief that IVF supports a pro-life agenda.
The initiative reflects Trump’s ongoing effort to reframe pro-family policies within a conservative framework that emphasizes life, parenthood, and access to medical care for aspiring parents.
