The Republican Party faces total extinction if Senate leaders refuse to eliminate the 60-vote filibuster, President Donald Trump declared Monday in a stark warning that painted a picture of permanent Democratic dominance.
Trump took to Truth Social to deliver the blunt message to his own party’s Senate majority, predicting that Democrats would add new states, pack the courts, and seize control of voting systems nationwide if Republicans don’t act first.
“If Senate Republicans don’t TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER, the Dumocrats will, and I will be, despite how well our Party is doing, the last Republican President!” Trump wrote.
The president laid out a specific scenario he believes would unfold under future Democratic control. Puerto Rico, where Republicans capture just 4% of the vote, and Washington, D.C., at 3% Republican, would gain statehood. That move alone would hand Democrats four additional Senate seats, eight House members, and a massive boost in both popular and Electoral College votes.
“It will be impossible for Republicans to ever win an Election again,” Trump declared. “In other words, it will be THE END OF AMERICA!”
The warning comes as Trump continues to pressure Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who has so far resisted calls to end the filibuster rule that requires 60 votes to advance most legislation. Thune has also rejected the president’s suggestion to fire the Senate parliamentarian, which would allow Republicans to push through bills with a simple majority.
Trump’s frustration with Senate procedure isn’t new. He’s repeatedly called for eliminating the filibuster to pass major legislation, arguing that Republicans must use their current majority to maximum effect before Democrats return to power and do the same.
Democrats have indeed floated ending the filibuster when they held the Senate. They’ve also openly discussed expanding the Supreme Court to reverse landmark legal decisions that conservatives have fought decades to achieve.
Trump’s argument essentially boils down to political survival: strike first or be struck down permanently.
The president specifically warned that Democrats would gain control of “Voting Mechanisms and Systems, both Legal and otherwise, throughout the United States” if given the chance to reshape the political landscape through statehood expansion and court packing.
Senate Republicans find themselves caught between the traditional conservative defense of institutional norms and a president demanding they tear down procedural barriers while they still can. The filibuster has long been viewed as a protection for the minority party, but Trump sees it as a tool that will ultimately be used against Republicans once they lose power.
