Former President Donald J. Trump’s campaign has requested several security measures amid recent threats against his life.
The campaign has asked for military aircraft and vehicles, expanded flight restrictions, and ballistic glass, according to The Washington Post.
The outlet called the requests “extraordinary and unprecedented,” explaining that Trump’s campaign advisors received briefing suggesting that Iran is actively threatening to assassinate him.
“[N]o nominee in recent history has been ferried around in military planes ahead of an election,” The Post wrote.
Trump has begun traveling in nondescript planes, The Post noted. Officials have also divided up his motorcade.
“Assistance from the Department of Defense is regularly provided for the former president’s protection, to include explosive ordnance disposal, canine units, and airlift transportation,” Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said, adding, “Additionally, the former president is receiving the highest level of technical security assets which include unmanned aerial vehicles, counter unmanned aerial surveillance systems, ballistics and other advanced technology systems.”
Rep. Michael Waltz (R-FL) has also called for the Secret Service to provide military aircraft for Trump’s protection.
“Our other adversaries: China, Russia, North Korea, and terrorist groups are watching,” Waltz wrote on social media. “Biden and Harris’s lack of action on the Iran threat is normalizing this behavior by our enemies.”
“Assassinating a major party nominee should be the BRIGHTEST of red lines.”
President Joe Biden told reporters that he directed officials to give Trump “every single thing he needs.”
“Look, I’ve told the department to give him every — every single thing he needs for his — at any other — as — as he were a sitting president, give all that needs,” Biden said. “If it fits within that category, that’s fine. But if it doesn’t, he shouldn’t.”
