Hakeem Jeffries — a leading Democrat in Congress — said Wednesday that Donald Trump deserves credit for “finally” securing the U.S. border after years of migrant-flow crisis under the previous administration. Jeffries made the acknowledgement during an appearance on The Situation Room, responding to a question on whether Trump’s immigration crackdown merited bipartisan recognition.
Jeffries commented: “The border is secure. That’s a good thing. It’s happened on his watch. He wants to claim credit for it. Of course, he’ll get credit for that.”
According to the discussion, recent government data show U.S. Border Patrol has released zero undocumented migrants into the U.S. for six consecutive months, and daily average apprehensions at the southwest border are now lower than during the prior administration.
Despite giving credit for border security success, Jeffries criticized other aspects of the administration’s immigration actions. He argued that many deportations targeted law-abiding immigrants, disrupted families, and at times removed citizens improperly — a stance he said many Americans find unacceptable.
A spokeswoman for the White House disputed some of Jeffries’ criticisms, saying claims that Trump’s record on deportations misled or harmed lawful families were inaccurate. The spokeswoman affirmed that the Biden years left behind a broken border system and praised ongoing efforts to restore order and safeguard the homeland.
Jeffries’ remarks mark a significant moment of bipartisan acknowledgement — rare among top Democrats — that the border situation has improved substantially. For conservative readers, it underlines growing urgency among lawmakers to secure borders and enforce immigration laws, even when partisan tensions remain high.
