Quinn Ewers, quarterback for the Texas Longhorns, made a bold political statement ahead of his team’s College Football Playoff game against the Clemson Tigers. Arriving in a sharp navy blue pinstriped suit with a red tie, Ewers sported a gold tie clip engraved with “Trump,” signaling his support for the president-elect.
Ewers has previously expressed admiration for Donald Trump on social media. After an assassination attempt on Trump’s life in Butler, Pennsylvania, Ewers shared a picture of Trump raising his fist in defiance. Following Trump’s election victory, Ewers posted a graphic featuring Trump and Senator J.D. Vance, calling it “Legendary.”
He joins a growing number of athletes openly supporting Trump. San Francisco 49ers star Nick Bosa wore a “Make America Great Again” hat after a game, despite incurring an $11,000 fine. Trump has also maintained strong ties to sports, attending events like the Army-Navy game, which drew record-breaking viewership of over 9 million, as well as NFL and UFC events.
Ewers’ Longhorns led Clemson 28-10 at halftime, with the winner set to face Arizona State in the Peach Bowl on New Year’s Day.
Last month, the National Football League (NFL) fined San Francisco 49ers Defensive End Nick Bosa $11,255 for wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat in support of President-elect Donald Trump on the field after winning last week.
The league claims the move was in violation of a non-partisan rule that prohibits players from displaying any message relating to a political activity or campaign.
Bosa has been a longtime supporter of Trump and entered an area on the field in which three teammates were being interviewed on liive television. Bosa walked between the players and pointed to his hat that read, “Make America Great Again.”
“I don’t think my position on speaking about it is going to change,” Bosa said Wednesday. “Clearly, the nation spoke, and we got what we got.”
