U.S. Senate voted Wednesday to advance the so-called Respect for Marriage Act (H.r. 8404), which "provides statutory authority for same-sex and interracial marriages” and revokes provisions that define marriage as between a man and a woman.

Trump-backed Kevin Kiley (R-Ca.) defeated his Democrat opponent in the midterms, securing the House majority for Republicans.

The law has been held up in court.
