The Spanberger protest scandal erupted Thursday when a white supporter of Democrat Abigail Spanberger held up a racist sign targeting black Republican gubernatorial candidate Winsome Earle-Sears. The sign read: “Hey Winsome, If Trans Can’t Share Your Bathroom Then Blacks Can’t Share My Water Fountain,” according to photos posted on X by journalist Brandon Jarvis.
The protester wore a “WoFava” shirt, representing We of Action, an Arlington-based far-left group that has canvassed for Spanberger and is actively promoting her campaign events. The group, tied to the Indivisible network, has a long history of theatrical anti-Republican activism, including stunts involving “chicken suits” to protest what it called the “Trump-Musk coup.”
Earle-Sears, the state’s lieutenant governor, swiftly condemned the sign: “I’m disgusted, but not surprised. This is the ‘tolerant’ left Abigail Spanberger defends.” She added, “I’m an immigrant, a Marine, and above all, a human being. There is no place for this disgusting hatred in our Commonwealth. Anyone who doesn’t condemn this sign is complicit in approving it.”
Spanberger attempted damage control, calling the sign “racist, abhorrent, and unacceptable.” But the protester’s affiliation with groups supporting her campaign underscores the double standard of the left’s rhetoric. Democrats claim moral high ground while their allies unleash open racism against political opponents.
As one man warned the protester in a video, her sign was “getting a lot of play on TV right now—negative.” That moment captured what Virginians already see: the left’s “tolerance” is little more than a mask for hate.
