President-elect Donald Trump challenged reports Wednesday regarding the withdrawal of Florida Sheriff Chad Chronister as his nominee to lead the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Trump clarified on Truth Social that he, not Chronister, made the decision to withdraw the sheriff from consideration, citing disagreements over Chronister’s past actions and statements.
The Wall Street Journal and other major outlets had reported late Tuesday that Chronister withdrew voluntarily, following a X post from Chronster’s personal account.
Trump emphasized that the decision to remove Chronister was his own, stating, “I pulled him out because I did not like what he said to my pastors and other supporters.”
Chronister, the sheriff of Hillsborough County, Florida, faced scrutiny for actions during his tenure, particularly for arresting a pastor who defied COVID-19 lockdowns by holding church services. This history reportedly clashed with Trump’s close ties to evangelical leaders and supporters, who were instrumental in his electoral victory.
Trump dismissed the narrative of a “setback” in his cabinet-building process, pointing to his recent electoral win as proof of his political momentum. However, his selection process has not been without controversy. In addition to Chronister’s withdrawal, Trump’s early pick for attorney general, former Rep. Matt Gaetz, also stepped aside. His potential choice for defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, is reportedly facing resistance in securing allies for confirmation.
Despite these challenges, Trump remains confident in the progress of his cabinet. Some of his other nominations, such as Pam Bondi for attorney general and Marco Rubio for secretary of state, are viewed as likely to succeed in the confirmation process.
Trump’s inauguration is set for January 20, with his cabinet selections expected to play a pivotal role in shaping his administration’s agenda. While disputes over nominees have drawn attention, Trump’s handling of the Chronister situation demonstrates his willingness to take swift action to align his administration with his vision and core supporters.
