Seattle City Council to Appoint Replacement for District 2 After Tammy Morales Resigns

Seattle’s City Council will begin the new year by seeking a replacement for the District 2 position, following the resignation of Councilmember Tammy Morales. Morales, who represents neighborhoods like Rainier Beach, Beacon Hill, Columbia City, and the Chinatown/International District, announced that she would step down next month, citing mental health concerns. She stated that the pressures of her role had negatively impacted both her mental and physical well-being.

The city has set an application period from January 2 to January 9 for those interested in applying for the vacant seat. The appointee will serve only until the 2025 general election results are finalized.

This marks the second consecutive year that the Seattle City Council has had to appoint a member. In 2023, Tanya Woo was appointed to fill the seat left vacant by Teresa Mosqueda’s resignation when she moved to the King County Council.

Applicants must meet several qualifications, including being a U.S. citizen, a registered voter in Seattle for at least 120 days, and capable of reading and writing in English. Additional criteria may be determined by the council itself.

Seattle City Council President Sara Nelson expressed optimism about hearing from potential candidates, especially as the council tackles key issues like public safety and accountability in the city.

Under the city’s charter, the council has 20 days to fill the vacancy, beginning January 7, 2025. If a candidate is not appointed by January 27, the council will be required to meet every business day until a suitable replacement is found.
