MSNBC’s attempt to revitalize its primetime lineup by promoting former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has faltered as ratings collapse in key demographics. Her new show, The Briefing, experienced a significant drop in viewership, coinciding with renewed scrutiny over her role in downplaying President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline.
The Briefing debuted on May 6, 2025, attracting 1.2 million viewers, including 139,000 in the key 25-54 age demographic. However, by the second episode, viewership in that demographic plummeted by 53% to just 65,000. The show was outperformed by reruns of Bob’s Burgers, King of Queens, and Paw Patrol.
During her first week, Psaki averaged 92,000 viewers in the 25-54 demographic, a 47% decline compared to Rachel Maddow’s last full week in the same time slot. On Tuesday, The Briefing drew only 79,000 viewers in the coveted age group, placing Psaki fourth among MSNBC’s weekday hosts. Only Chris Hayes and Stephanie Ruhle had lower ratings in that demographic.
Psaki’s challenges extend beyond ratings. She faces criticism for her role in obscuring President Biden’s cognitive issues. In a recent interview, Psaki defended her actions, stating, “I’m not a doctor,” when questioned about missing signs of Biden’s decline. She claimed she never witnessed the behavior Biden exhibited during the June 2024 debate while serving in the White House.
The combination of declining viewership and controversy over her past statements has raised questions about Psaki’s suitability for the primetime slot. As MSNBC navigates these challenges, the network’s strategy and Psaki’s future remain uncertain.
