Orange County Democrat Charged with Election Fraud in Re-Election Scheme

Alyce Van, a former Democrat Stanton City Councilwoman, is facing multiple felony charges of election fraud after allegedly violating residency laws during her time in office.

According to prosecutors, Van was elected in November 2020 to represent Stanton’s City Council District #2. However, less than a year into her term, she and her family purchased a home in District #4. Despite moving out of her designated district, Van failed to resign as required by law and continued to serve as the District #2 Councilmember.

To maintain the appearance of eligibility, Van reportedly left her District #4 home, drove to her former residence in District #2, and walked to City Hall to attend council meetings. Prosecutors allege this was a deliberate effort to conceal her ineligibility.

The situation escalated in July 2024, when Van filed official nomination papers to run for re-election in District #2, signing an affidavit under penalty of perjury. Authorities say she knowingly filed false documents, as she no longer met the residency requirements for the position.

Van is now charged with four felonies, including:

  • One count of perjury,
  • One count of offering a false or forged document,
  • One count of filing false nomination papers, and
  • One count of voting unlawfully in an election.

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer condemned Van’s actions, stating, “The integrity of our elections will be safeguarded, and political candidates who lie and cheat the system in order to get elected will be prosecuted.”

This case highlights growing concerns about election integrity and the importance of holding public officials accountable to the law.
