A reported 100 vehicles gathered to rally outside Edmond North High School in Edmond, Oklahoma, on Monday in response to a controversial flag policy implemented by Edmond Public Schools (EPS).
The policy, which prohibits students from displaying any type of flag on campus, was intended to limit distractions and maintain a safe environment, according to an EPS spokesperson.
The protest was sparked after high school senior Caleb Horst was told he could not fly the American flag on the back of his truck. Horst expressed his frustration, emphasizing his belief that the policy infringes on First Amendment rights.
“I’ve never really had a problem with it before, and it’s our First Amendment, so it’s kind of hard for them to infringe upon our rights, you know?” Horst told KOCO.
“In the end, we’re all American, we’re all united under that flag so there’s not much anybody can do to separate us,” he added.
The rally was organized by a Facebook group aiming to underscore the importance of patriotism and the symbolic meaning of the American flag. The event has drawn significant attention and criticism of the school district’s policy.
