North Carolina Supreme Court Strikes Down Voter ID Law, Claims ‘Racially Discriminatory Purpose’

North Carolina’s Supreme Court affirmed a lower court ruling that offering identification prior to voting is unconstitutional. The court claimed the original 2018 law “was motivated by a racially discriminatory purpose.” The court also decided that North Carolina’s senate map must be redrawn, arguing it was gerrymandered by Republicans.

From Fox News:

The two decisions were passed along party lines 4-3 with Democrats supporting and Republicans dissenting.

The North Carolina Supreme Court is set for a massive upheaval in the new year. Beginning in January, the court will consist of five Republicans and two Democrats.
