New York City Schools ‘Overwhelmed’ By Influx of Migrant Students

New York City schools are warning that their teachers and staff cannot handle the large number of migrant children entering the classroom.

QUICK FACTS:
  • District 2 Community Ed Council member Danyela Egorov told Fox News this week New York City schools are “overwhelmed” by the increase in Spanish speaking, migrant children entering their classrooms.
  • “Our schools are not prepared. We don’t have bilingual teachers. Children are being asked to translate for our children. Our schools were not prepared to receive this influx of students,” Egorov said. “And we want to make sure that everybody is being served well.”
  • Egorov said schools in the city are already dealing with the consequences of COVID closures and students falling behind.
  • “Our teachers are doing the best they can, but you cannot teach five grade levels in one class,” Egorov continued.
COMMUNITY COUNCIL MEMBER DANYELA EGOROV ON THE INFLUX OF MIGRANT CHILDREN IN NYC SCHOOLS:

“Our schools are doing the best that they can. But the problems from the federal government, from city and state, are being dumped in our schools. And it’s not our responsibility for us to do immigration policy.”

BACKGROUND:
  • In August 2022, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced he would be busing migrants to New York City from Texas, as officials in the state have been vocal supporters of providing cash benefits to illegal immigrants under her state’s $2.1 billion Excluded Workers Fund program.
  • “I hope [New York City Mayor Eric Adams] follows through on his promise of welcoming all migrants with open arms so that our overrun and overwhelmed border towns can find relief,” Abbott said at the time.
  • However, after Gov. Abbott’s move, Adams’ tone on illegal immigration shifted, even calling for federal intervention to assist with the inbound illegal immigrants and threatening to send New Yorkers back to Texas.
