Migrants Surge the Border as Title 42 Is Soon to Expire

There were an estimated 10,000 encounters at the southern border on Tuesday, according to a U.S. official.

The Associated Press reported that a city commissioner in Brownsville, Texas, Pedro Cardenas, said, “Our buses are full. Our planes are full.”

At a White House press briefing, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s (R) move to bus migrants to sanctuary cities.

“It is a both sad and tragic day when a government official uses migrants as a pawn for political purposes,” Mayorkas stated.

Reporting from The Associated Press:

The stopping of about 10,000 migrants by the Border Patrol on Tuesday made for one of the agency’s busiest days ever, according to a second U.S. official who provided information to the AP on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

The daily average was about 5,200 in March, according to the latest publicly available data.
