Former First Lady Michelle Obama has ignited controversy after expressing grievances about the personal costs associated with residing in the White House during her husband’s presidency. In a recent appearance on “The Diary of a CEO” podcast, Obama highlighted expenses such as food and travel that were not covered by the government, stating, “You’re paying for every bit of food that you eat… even travel, if you’re not traveling with the president.”
Obama elaborated on the financial challenges faced during the presidency, noting that while housing and official staff were provided, other costs fell on the First Family. She remarked, “It is an expensive proposition, and you’re running for two years and not earning an income, so all of that was in my mind, um, how would we manage this.”
These comments have drawn criticism from various quarters, with some pointing to the Obamas’ substantial increase in wealth post-presidency. Reports indicate that their net worth grew from approximately $1.3 million upon entering the White House to around $70 million in subsequent years.
Critics argue that such complaints appear out of touch, especially considering the privileges associated with the presidential office. Commentator Megyn Kelly contrasted Obama’s remarks with former President Donald Trump’s hospitality, noting his generosity in hosting guests at the White House without similar grievances.
This is not the first time Michelle Obama has addressed the financial aspects of White House life. In a 2018 interview, she recounted being billed for a $500 peach, emphasizing the unexpected personal expenses incurred during their tenure.
