Man Takes Hostage and Kills One at California Park after Wounding Officer

In Roseville, California, a man being pursued by the police took two individuals hostage at a public park, leading to the death of one hostage before surrendering, according to a report from The Associated Press (AP).

Prior to this, the man had injured a California Highway Patrol officer.

The tragic incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, while families enjoyed baseball games and children attended camp in the area.

The hospitalized Highway Patrol officer was in stable condition.

However, the identities of the two hostages, one of whom lost their life, have not been disclosed.

The surviving hostage received medical attention at a hospital for injuries that are believed to be non-life-threatening, according to a statement released by the City of Roseville.

Meanwhile, the suspect, whose identity remains unknown, was also hospitalized after being shot.

There is no information about the suspect’s condition.

It is not clear how the suspect was wounded or whether law enforcement officials had fired any shots.

The events began to unfold when highway patrol officers attempted to serve a warrant to the man, resulting in him shooting and injuring an officer. Capt. Kelby Newton of the Roseville Police Department received a radio call around 12:30 p.m., alerting them of the officer’s injury.

When the Roseville police arrived, they witnessed the suspect carrying a gun and fleeing, AP notes.

He then took two civilians hostage at the park, shooting both of them, according to Newton. It remains unknown what led to the warrant being served to the suspect.

Mahany Park is situated in a Sacramento suburb and comprises a sports complex, public library, aquatic center, and nature trails, according to AP.
