A 20-year-old man was arrested early Wednesday morning for attempting to sneak into Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Michael Aromando was apprehended by New York Police Department (NYPD) officers assigned to security detail at the residence shortly after the city’s New Year’s Eve celebration.
According to the NYPD, Aromando was spotted at 4:24 a.m. attempting to gain entry into the mansion. Following a brief investigation, he was taken into custody. The police confirmed that he was carrying a Christmas ornament that he had reportedly taken from the residence.
Aromando has been charged with attempted burglary in the second degree. The Mayor’s office confirmed to the Washington Examiner that Adams was not home at the time of the intrusion. The suspect’s bail has been set at $5,000, and an 11 p.m. curfew has been imposed as part of his release conditions, as reported by local outlet Fox 5.
This incident occurs amid ongoing investigations into Mayor Adams by the Department of Justice. The mayor has consistently maintained his innocence, calling the investigation “suspect” and asserting that he would fight to the “bitter end” for the city.
This breach of security at Gracie Mansion has raised concerns about the safety of high-profile public officials and the protection measures in place at their residences.
