First Sgt. Igor Pibenev, a 32-year-old Israeli police officer and father of three, who bravely confronted Hamas terrorists during the October 7, 2023, attacks, has tragically died by suicide. Pibenev’s actions on that day were credited with saving numerous lives, but he reportedly struggled with survivor’s guilt and post-traumatic stress disorder in the aftermath.
On the morning of the attacks, Pibenev was at his police station in Hebron when he learned of the Hamas assault. He immediately drove toward his home in Yated, near the Gaza border, encountering and neutralizing multiple terrorists along the way. His swift actions included eliminating two terrorists near Urim Junction and engaging others near Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak.
Upon reaching his home, Pibenev was relieved to find his wife and daughters safe. He described the reunion as profoundly emotional, likening it to experiencing the birth of his children again.
Despite his heroism, Pibenev struggled with the psychological aftermath of the attacks. Three months prior to his death, his wife, Chani, publicly urged others to seek professional help for those suffering from trauma, emphasizing that feelings of guilt are not the individual’s fault.
Pibenev’s death highlights the ongoing mental health challenges faced by first responders and military personnel exposed to traumatic events. His bravery during one of Israel’s darkest days remains a testament to his dedication and courage.
