Illegal Immigrant’s Role in Fatal Crash Sparks Outcry from GOP Rep. Stewart Jones

South Carolina State Rep. Stewart Jones (R), a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump in the upcoming GOP primary election, shared the heart-wrenching story of his goddaughter, Maddie Hines, who tragically lost her life in a car accident caused by an illegal immigrant.

Jones recounted Maddie’s case during a press briefing on Thursday. In October 2023, Maddie was traveling in a car with her mother Chelsey, grandmother Theresa, and sister Kinsley when their vehicle was struck by Gabriel Arteaga’s car. While Maddie’s relatives were airlifted to a nearby hospital with critical injuries, Maddie herself was pronounced dead at the crash site.

Arteaga, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, had reportedly been deported during the Trump administration but managed to illegally reenter the United States under President Joe Biden’s tenure.

“How many more American lives will be destroyed by open border policies?” Jones questioned passionately during the press conference, highlighting Maddie’s tragic story. At the event, Maddie’s parents held up pictures of her and promoted their foundation, “LoveLikeMaddie.com,” created in her memory.

Maddie, who was laid to rest on what would have been her fourth birthday, was remembered fondly in her obituary for her love of dancing, singing, and her infectious laughter. She was described as proud, caring, and deeply devoted to her family and faith, actively participating in church activities and cherishing her Bible verses.

Arteaga has been charged with driving without a license and reckless homicide. Although his bail was initially set at $50,000, it was later revoked, and he now remains in the Lawrence County Detention Center awaiting trial. If convicted of reckless homicide, Arteaga could face up to 10 years behind bars.
