Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) has introduced a bill to block federal funding to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) unless it adjusts its “bureaucratic stagnation” and renames the Metrorail.
The bill also calls for the WMATA to be renamed to the “Washington Metropolitan Authority for Greater Access” (WMAGA) and renames the Metrorail the “Trump Train.”
“WMATA has received billions in federal assistance over the years and continues to face operational, safety, and fiscal challenges,” said Steube. “In the spirit of DOGE, this bill demands accountability by conditioning federal funding on reforms that signal a cultural shift away from bureaucratic stagnation toward public-facing excellence and patriotism.”
“With Washington, D.C. preparing to host major global events such as the 2027 NFL Draft and multiple FIFA Club World Cup matches, our capital’s transit system must meet the highest standards,” he added. “The American people expect modern, reliable, and well-managed public services in their nation’s capital. This bill leverages federal funding to ensure the transit system earns the right to represent the nation on the world stage.”
The WMATA currently receives about $150 million in annual federal funding.
The bill is the latest renaming effort to honor President Trump. In March, a Texas state representative filed a bill to rename a portion of Interstate 35 to President Donald J. Trump Highway. Bills have also been introduced to place Trump on the $100 and $250 bills.
The legislation for the $100 bill calls for the Secretary of the Treasury to release a design featuring Trump no later than December 31, 2026, while the legislation surrounding the $250 bill directs the Bureau of Printing and Engraving to design and print the bill while also creating an exemption to a policy prohibiting living figures from appearing on currency for living U.S. presidents.
