The House Freedom Caucus released a plan to avoid a “lame duck” omnibus that would send Democratic initiatives into a second Trump administration.
The caucus urged Republicans to “use our leverage in the September spending fight to prevent non-citizens from voting in our elections and ensure Democrats cannot undermine President Trump’s second term with a ‘lame duck’ omnibus in December,” according to a statement.
Their position seeks to extend government funding through early 2025 to prevent Democrats from benefiting from a possible omnibus package.
“The House Freedom Caucus believes that House Republicans should return to Washington to continue the work of passing all 12 appropriations bills to cut spending and advance our policy priorities,” the statement reads. “If unsuccessful, in the inevitability that Congress considers a Continuing Resolution, government funding should be extended into early 2025 to avoid a lame duck omnibus that preserves Democrat spending and policies well into the next administration.”
“Furthermore, the Continuing Resolution should include the SAVE Act – as called for by President Trump – to prevent non-citizens from voting to preserve free and fair elections in light of the millions of illegal aliens imported by the Biden-Harris administration over the last four years,” the group added.
House Speaker Mike Johnson told The Hill last week that Republicans were having “some very thoughtful discussion about the pros and cons of the various strategies on [funding the government], and that decision is not yet determined, but it will be very soon.”
Last month, the House passed the SAVE Act, a bill requiring proof of citizenship for voting in federal elections.
The Senate has not acted on the bill.
Prior to the House vote, Trump urged the GOP to pass the bill, writing on Truth Social, “Republicans must pass the Save Act, or go home and cry yourself to sleep. Non-citizen Illegal Migrants are getting the right to vote, being pushed by crooked Democrat Politicians who are not being stopped by an equally dishonest Justice Department. Our whole voting system is under siege. Harmeet and David, go to court and get this stopped, NOW.”
