Tom Homan, President Trump’s top immigration advisor and border czar, said Sunday the U.S.-Mexico border is now the “most secure in the history of this nation.” Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union, Homan credited strict enforcement of immigration law and the administration’s refusal to tolerate sanctuary policies that obstruct federal efforts.
Homan criticized sanctuary cities for releasing criminal aliens into communities rather than handing them over to ICE. He emphasized that such policies force agents to conduct arrests in public areas, where they often encounter multiple illegal immigrants during a single operation. According to Homan, this practice endangers both officers and the public, making it harder to apprehend known threats safely.
The former ICE director pointed out that under the previous administration, agents were instructed not to detain individuals simply for being in the country illegally. He said that policy ignored the law and undermined the agency’s mission. Homan stated plainly that illegal entry is a crime and must be treated as such, regardless of political pressures.
Homan said the message to the world must be clear: entering the United States illegally will carry real consequences. He warned that allowing illegal entrants to remain after a judge issues a removal order sends the wrong signal and encourages lawlessness. He insisted that enforcing removals and eliminating catch-and-release policies are essential to restoring the rule of law at the border.
He concluded by tying these enforcement measures directly to the dramatic improvements seen today. According to Homan, a combination of more agents, better policy, and decisive action has created “the most secure border in the history of this nation.” He made clear that it’s not just the manpower but the political will to enforce existing immigration law that has made the difference.
