New York Governor Kathy Hochul has thrown her support behind a redistricting plan for her own state—while simultaneously condemning Republicans for doing the same in Texas. Hosting Texas Democrats who fled their state to block a vote, Hochul promised to “fight fire with fire,” exposing a glaring double standard within her party.
“If Republicans are willing to rewrite these rules to give themselves an advantage, then they’re leaving us no choice. We must do the same,” Hochul declared Monday. While accusing Texas and other Republican-led states of conducting a “legal insurrection,” Hochul admitted she’s exploring “every option to redraw our state congressional lines as soon as possible.”
Her accusation against Republicans—“What Texas and Republican states are doing at the direction of Donald Trump… is nothing short of a legal insurrection against our Capitol”—rings hollow as she coordinates a parallel power grab in New York.
Meanwhile, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott continues his pushback against the absent lawmakers, saying, “real Texans don’t run from a fight.” Abbott warned that Democrats who solicit or accept funds to skip the vote “may have violated bribery laws,” adding, “anyone who offers, confers or agrees to confer” financial assistance could face charges.
