Jean Paul Al Arab, a criminology graduate from the University at Buffalo (UB), defied university officials by running across the commencement stage holding his infant son, creating a viral moment that has garnered widespread attention. Despite being informed that children were not permitted on stage due to safety concerns, Al Arab fulfilled a promise to his son by including him in the graduation ceremony.
During the spring 2025 commencement at Alumni Arena, Al Arab waited until the end of the ceremony before making his move. Clutching his son, who was dressed in a matching blue cap and gown, he ran onto the stage, evading security personnel and a police officer who attempted to intercept him. He successfully shook hands with administrators and exited the stage, receiving cheers from the audience.
Al Arab later explained that during a preparatory class, he had received permission to walk with his son. However, on the day of the ceremony, officials rescinded that approval and called the police when he attempted to proceed. “I ran, that’s what I did. I had to. I promised him I was gonna walk with him on the stage,” Al Arab told WGRZ.
Al Arab shared the stunt on social media, “Here I am graduating with my boy by my side. WE DID IT!” he commented.
The University at Buffalo maintained its stance on safety protocols. “Commencement rules are in place for the safety of all those in attendance and to avoid disruptions in the venue, ensuring each graduate is equally provided with a well-deserved moment to individually cross the stage and be recognized for their outstanding accomplishments at UB,” the university stated.
Despite the breach, the university acknowledged the moment with a touch of humor, noting that while Al Arab’s son did not receive a diploma, they hope to see him graduate in the future.
