In response to the devastating Palisades Fire in Pacific Palisades and the Eaton Fire in Altadena, which left thousands of families without homes, California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the launch of a major initiative, “LA Rises,”aimed at accelerating recovery and rebuilding efforts.
“Los Angeles will rise again — stronger, more united, and more resilient than ever,” Gov. Newsom stated in his announcement. “Just as California came together to fight the fires, we’ll work together to rebuild.”
To spearhead the initiative, Newsom enlisted prominent leaders from the private sector, including Dodgers Chairman Mark Walter, NBA legend and businessman Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson, and LA28 Chairperson Casey Wasserman.
“With Mark, Earvin, and Casey’s proven leadership and deep commitment to Los Angeles, we’ll tap into the enormous creativity, experience, and resources of the private sector, alongside local, state, and federal efforts,” Newsom said.
“LA Rises” aims to unite resources across the private and public sectors to rebuild the affected communities in Altadena, Pasadena, Pacific Palisades, and beyond.
“This is a time for bold action,” Johnson emphasized. “We’re bringing together the best resources and biggest hearts across California to ensure every Angeleno — no matter their race, socioeconomic status, or neighborhood — has a chance to rebuild and thrive.”
The Mark Walter Family Foundation and the LA Dodgers Foundation have already pledged up to $100 million, with plans to secure additional funds through donations.
“LA Rises” will work in tandem with state, county, and city agencies to maximize resources for recovery, aiming not just to rebuild but to strengthen communities for future resilience.
The initiative follows Newsom’s signing of a $2.5 billion relief package last week, underscoring California’s commitment to supporting families impacted by the fires.
This collaborative recovery effort reflects a vision of restoring Los Angeles while preparing it to withstand future challenges.
