Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) said he will not support President Trump’s nominee for U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Ed Martin.
Should Martin’s nomination fail to move forward, Judge James Boasberg will choose the DC Attorney.
“Most of my concerns [are] related to January 6,” Tillis said, adding, “I have no tolerance for anybody who entered the building on January 6 and that’s probably where most of the friction was.”
“If Mr. Martin were being put forth as a U.S. attorney for any district except the district where January 6 happened, the protest happened, I’d probably support him. But not in this district,” Tillis told reporters, adding, “At this point, I’ve indicated to the White House I wouldn’t support his nomination.”
Martin served as defense counsel in January 6 cases.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in D.C. is considered a “unique” role, according to the Department of Justice. “It serves as both the local and the federal prosecutor for the nation’s capital.”
At a local level, prosecutions range from misdemeanor drug possession cases to murders, while at the federal level, prosecution range from gangs, fraud, terrorist, and child pornography cases.
“The Office also enforces the law and defends the interests of the United States in civil suits brought in the district,” the DOJ site reads. “Its location in the seat of the federal government gives it responsibility for many cases of national importance, including far-reaching challenges to federal policies and employment practices.”
Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk warned that if Martin is not confirmed, “we will have a Trump hating US Attorney in the nation’s capital.”
