GOP Launches Probe into Biden Family’s Business Deals and Influence Peddling

House Republicans on Wednesday announced the launch of an investigation into Joe Biden and his family.

The Republican-led House Oversight Committee, headed by Representative James Comer of Kentucky, issued a series of letters to the Treasury Department demanding financial information regarding transactions made by members of the Biden family that were flagged as suspicious activity.

“Now that Democrats no longer have one-party rule in Washington, oversight and accountability are coming,” chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Rep. Comer, said in a statement. “This investigation is a top priority for House Republicans during the 118th Congress.”

Comer also sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen requesting that she provide the panel with bank activity reports for several members of the Biden family, including Hunter Biden, Joe Biden’s brother James Biden, and some of their associated companies and associates.

“The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating Biden’s involvement in his family’s foreign business practices and international influence peddling schemes,” he wrote to Yellen.

The committee also requested testimony from former Twitter executives who were involved in the handling of an October 2020 story by the New York Post about Hunter.

Republicans have claimed that the story was suppressed for political reasons.

With this action, the GOP has set the stage for a contentious, politically charged showdown with the White House, that could delve into the affairs of the Biden family and potentially shape the 2024 presidential race.

Comer, along with other Republicans, has previously stated that there are “troubling questions” regarding the business dealings of Hunter and James Biden, that require further examination.

The Republican lawmakers and their staff have spent the past year analyzing messages and financial transactions from a laptop that belonged to Hunter Biden.

With their new subpoena power in the House, Republicans now have the authority to compel testimony and conduct a more aggressive investigation.

The possibility of issuing congressional subpoenas to foreign entities that did business with Hunter Biden has also been discussed, and the committee has recently hired James Mandolfo, a former federal prosecutor, to assist with the investigation as general counsel.

It should be noted that Hunter’s taxes and foreign business work are already the subject of a federal investigation, with a grand jury in Delaware hearing testimony in recent months.

Despite never holding a position on the Presidential campaign or in the White House, Hunter’s membership on the board of a Ukrainian energy company, and his efforts to strike deals in China have long raised questions about whether he traded on his father’s public service, including reported references in his emails to the “big guy”.

Joe Biden has stated that he never spoke to his son about his foreign business.
