Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) plans to conduct a transcribed interview with former NIAID Director Anthony Fauci, according to a letter published by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (HSGAC).
The news comes through a letter sent by Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI), the top Democrat on the committee, to Paul, objecting to the plan. The letter criticized Paul’s failure to “give the Committee minority notice and opportunity to participate in your planned transcribed interview of Dr. Anthony Fauci later this month and have worked instead to prevent any efforts to ensure a fair and legitimate oversight process.”
“The minority sought to participate only after independently learning that you were in the process of scheduling this interview. However, the majority informed both the minority and counsel for Dr. Fauci that you would be conducting a majority-only transcribed interview and minority staff would not be allowed to participate,” Peters wrote. “Excluding the Committee minority from a transcribed interview is contrary to [Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs] long history of bipartisan investigations and comity – and to my knowledge, is completely unprecedented.”
Peters alleges in the letter that Paul “explicitly violated Committee rules by attempting to exclude minority Committee staff from a Committee deposition that occurred in a classified setting” in March. A similar violation occurred in May, Peters notes.
The letter further claims that Paul and his staff have “refused or ignored repeated requests to ensure that all documents received in response to your subpoenas or letters are made available to the minority.”
Peters then urges Paul to provide the minority with adequate notice of documents, depositions, and transcribed interviews.
Paul has sought to hold Fauci accountable for his actions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic for years. In 2023, Paul sent a criminal referral to the Biden DOJ following Fauci’s testimony before Congress. Paul said that an email uncovered from Fauci to British medical researcher Jeremy Farrar contradicted “everything he said in committee hearing” when Fauci denied “that they funded any gain of function, and it’s absolutely a lie.”
In 2025, Paul declared that he would not “rest until the entire truth of the coverup is exposed. Fauci’s pardon will only serve as an accelerant to pierce the veil of deception.”
In May 2026, Paul urged the DOJ to charge Fauci for lying to Congress about gain-of-function research.
