Cuomo’s LGBTQ Support Crumbles as Advocacy Groups Back Rivals

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, once hailed for legalizing same-sex marriage in the state, is facing a significant setback in his bid for New York City mayor. Despite his past contributions to LGBTQ rights, prominent LGBTQ political clubs have chosen to endorse other candidates in the upcoming Democratic primary.

Organizations such as the Stonewall Democratic Club of NYC, Lambda Independent Democrats, and the Jim Owles Liberal LGBT Club have publicly supported City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and Comptroller Brad Lander over Cuomo. These endorsements highlight a shift in the LGBTQ community’s support, citing concerns over Cuomo’s past controversies and a desire for progressive leadership.

Gabriel Lewenstein, president of the Stonewall Democratic Club, criticized Cuomo as “all about himself,” emphasizing the need for a mayor who prioritizes New Yorkers’ interests. Similarly, Allen Roskoff of the Jim Owles Club acknowledged Cuomo’s role in advancing gay marriage but deemed him “unsuitable to be mayor,” pointing to his political baggage and lack of progressive values.

Cuomo’s campaign has downplayed the lack of endorsements, focusing instead on his historical support for LGBTQ rights and recent backing from major unions. His spokesperson, Esther Jensen, stated that Cuomo “looks forward to winning the votes of the LGBTQ community citywide,” highlighting his track record of delivering on LGBTQ issues.

The former governor’s absence from several LGBTQ-focused candidate forums has also drawn criticism, with some community members interpreting it as a lack of engagement. In contrast, Adams and Lander have actively participated in these events, presenting detailed plans to advance LGBTQ rights in the city.

As the Democratic primary approaches, Cuomo’s campaign faces the challenge of reconnecting with a community that once viewed him as a champion but now seeks leadership that aligns more closely with its current values and priorities.
