Apple Lays Off More Than 600 Workers in First Round of Post-Pandemic Cuts

Apple is laying off more than 600 workers in Santa Clara, signaling the company’s first big wave of post-pandemic job cuts.

The iPhone maker notified 614 workers in multiple offices that they were losing their jobs effective on May 27.

According to the filings under the state’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, the workers were cut from eight offices in Santa Clara.

Apple reportedly had a massive surge in hiring during 2020, when people spent more time and money online, however slowly began focusing on cutting costs in recent months.

“The filing comes weeks after Apple canceled a long-running project to build an electric, self-driving car in a team called the Special Projects Group. While the California notice didn’t mention the specific projects where jobs are being cut, none of the locations in the filing are at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters, but at smaller, satellite offices more likely to house secretive initiatives,” CNBC reported.

Positions that were cut allegedly include machine shop managers, hardware engineers and product design engineers.
