Americans Are ‘In Charge of War on the Ground’ in Ukraine, Says Journalist

Recently returned French journalist spent a week in Ukraine and was surprised to find Americans “in charge” on the ground.

QUICK FACTS:
  • International correspondent Georges Malbrunot says volunteer fighters were told Americans were the ones “in charge” of the war on the ground in Ukraine.
  • The journalist was specifically told that Americans were overseeing the training and enrolment of all international volunteers.
  • Malbrunot made his comments while speaking to CNews after returning from Ukraine where he stayed for just over a week.
THE JOURNALIST’S COMMENTS ABOUT LEADERSHIP ON THE GROUND:
  • “I had the surprise, and so did they, to discover that to be able to enter the Ukrainian army, well it’s the Americans who are in charge,” said Malbrunot.
  • “I’m talking of the training and enrolment of international volunteers into the Ukrainian army … I did my verifications, it’s a report that can be found in the Figaro magazine of this week.”
  • “And who is in charge? It’s the Americans, I saw it with my own eyes,” said Malbrunot, adding, “I thought I was with the international brigades, and I found myself facing the Pentagon.”
BACKGROUND:
  • Thus far, the United States has sent hundreds of millions in aid to Ukraine, including air and ground vehicles, body armor, and other defensive and offensive weapons, according to Voice of America News.
  • Biden on Wednesday told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy the US was sending his nation an additional $800 million worth of weapons, ammunition, and other security assistance.
  • However, American aid to Ukraine is not anything new, as the United States has had its hand in Ukraine’s fights since the 1990s, due in large part to their nuclear arsenal.
  • In addition to aid being sent through the conflict with Russia, since the year 2014, the United States has sent an average of around $350 million in humanitarian aid to Ukraine every year, according to The Conversation.
