Only eight Democrats voted to condemn socialism in a resolution on the matter, although the resolution passed 220-192. Two Democrats voted present.
Democrats joining Republicans in the vote include Reps. Kathy Castor (FL) and Darren Soto (FL); Vicente Gonzalez (TX) and Henry Cuellar (TX); Jared Golden (ME); Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA); Don Davis (NC); and Gabe Vasquez (NM). Those who voted present were Reps. Chrissy Houlahan (PA) and Maggie Goodlander (NH).
The resolution, H. Res. 1490, moves to condemn and denounce “socialism in all its forms.”
According to the filing, socialism “necessitates a concentration of power that has, time and time again, collapsed into communist regimes, totalitarian rule, and repressive dictatorship,” and has “repeatedly led to famine and mass murders, and the killing of over 100,000,000 people worldwide.”
The resolution also included language in support of the SAVE America Act, a move condemned by many Democrats. The resolution’s text asserts that the House of Representatives “calls for enactment of the SAVE America Act to ensure election security, increase public confidence in America’s voting system, and close loopholes in order to prevent noncitizens from voting in elections.”
Last year, Democrats again opposed a resolution condemning socialism. In a 285-98 vote, lawmakers condemned the “horrors of socialism” in “all its forms.” It noted that “many of the greatest crimes in history were committed by socialist ideologues, including Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, Fidel Castro, Pol Pot, Kim Jong Il, Kim Jong Un, Daniel Ortega, Hugo Chavez, and Nicolás Maduro.”
It added that the “United States was founded on the belief in the sanctity of the individual, to which the collectivistic system of socialism in all of its forms is fundamentally and necessarily opposed.”
