New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced “Parents’ Night Out,” a free, one-night program where workers watch residents’ children through city funds.
“Every parent knows that a few hours to yourself can feel like a luxury,” said Mamdani. “It shouldn’t be. That’s why we’re launching New York City’s first-ever Parents’ Night Out, so that parents can get a little time on their own to catch a movie, run errands or go on a date without worrying about who will take care of the kids — or how much it will cost. Making New York City more affordable isn’t just about lowering costs, it’s about giving people back their time. This administration is committed to making it easier to raise a family in the greatest city in the world.”
Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura explained the program as “providing a free, safe and fun experience for children while giving families a few hours to themselves.” She added that she’s proud to “ffer an affordable program that supports families and strengthens our communities.”
Parents registered for the event, which took place on August 16, by applying for an event waiver and a parks and recreation center membership.
The event expands upon Mamdani’s plan to provide free childcare across the city. The initial communities, School Districts 6, 10, 18, 23, and 27, were selected “based on economic need, projected child care demand, existing access gaps, provider capacity and readiness,” Mamdani’s office explained in March. The 2,000 available seats are intended to “serve families in high-need neighborhoods while ensuring programs launch responsibly and sustainably, with inclusive access for children with disabilities and families in temporary housing, including shelters.”
