NATO Ready to Bump Defense Spending

NATO chief Mark Rutte said the organization is ready to take more responsibility for its defense spending. Rutte explained that the group has “looked at the division of labor in the context of conventional forces” and found that European members, as well as Canada, are “ready, willing, and able to do more.”

Discussing the reduced contributions from the United States, Rutte noted, as per Courthouse News Service, “In some cases this has been cast as a problem — as the U.S. pulling away from its allies. But that is not the reality.”

“The U.S. has adjusted its pledges to the NATO Force Model,” he said. “This is not primarily about where forces and assets are currently, but about who would do what if our defense plans were activated.”

“Historically, this was overly reliant on the U.S. Now the U.S. has adjusted its pledged contributions — and other allies have stepped up to contribute more,” Rutte explained, adding that the United States had “made clear that the U.S. nuclear deterrent is solid.”

“And that it is crucial that Europe and Canada do more on the conventional front, understanding that the U.S. has obligations around the globe that it needs to account for,” he noted.

President Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO. He asserted that NATO is a “one-way street,” as the U.S. assists nations, but European allies fail to do the same. He has also told The Telegraph, when asked about potentially reconsidering NATO, that he would say beyond reconsideration. I was never swayed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that too, by the way.”

Further discussing NATO’s reluctance to assist the U.S., Trump said, “Beyond not being there, it was actually hard to believe. And I didn’t do a big sale. I just said, ‘Hey’, you know, I didn’t insist too much. I just think it should be automatic.”

“We’ve been there automatically, including Ukraine. Ukraine wasn’t our problem,” he said. “It was a test, and we were there for them, and we would always have been there for them. They weren’t there for us.”
