House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) sent a letter to former Biden Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra, demanding answers as to why he withheld Dr. Anthony Fauci’s diary from prior congressional investigations.
According to the letter to Becerra, “The contents of Dr. Fauci’s diary and the existence of his phone suggests that your response to the November 2, 2023, request from the Select Subcommittee omitted key responsive documents and information.” The Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic had requested materials related to “COVID-19,” “gain-of-function,” and “Wuhan,” each of which appears throughout Fauci’s diary.
“The COVID-19 pandemic and decisions made by Dr. Fauci caused the American people irreparable harm. The House Oversight Committee’s Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic investigated the origins of COVID-19, prolonged school closures, and U.S. funding of risky research at the Wuhan lab to uncover the truth and hold those responsible accountable. Yet the Biden Administration repeatedly concealed information and stonewalled our investigation,” Comer said in a statement. “It is unacceptable that former HHS Secretary Becerra withheld Dr. Fauci’s phone and diary from the Committee last Congress, despite those records being clearly responsive to our request. We are demanding answers and accountability from former Secretary Becerra.”
Fauci’s diary entries also concerned his fixation on fame. In May 2020, he wrote, “Big front page article [about] me appeared in the Washington Post. Very flattering. The situation with my national and international fame is explosive and really unimaginable. It is not hyoperbole to say that today I am the most famous and talked about person in the country and one of the most recognizable [person] in the world. Countless profiles on me in multiple media. I cannot even read all the things that are written [about] me since I am so busy….seriously. POTUS seems to be enamored of me even though I am taking the spotlight away from him.”
